Most people assume 'off-the-shelf' means 'sitting in a warehouse ready to ship now.' For big OEMs like FLSmidth, that's rarely true for large drive components or specialized crusher parts. 'Off-the-shelf' often means 'we have the raw castings and we can machine them to order in 10 days.'
I learned this in March 2023. We had a catastrophic failure on a Maag gearbox pinion. The rep said "it's a standard part, lead time 2 weeks." I assumed standard meant available.
