FLSmidth Company Overview: A 7-Step Procurement Checklist for Mining Equipment Buyers

What This Checklist Is For

If you're looking for a FLSmidth company overview from a mining industry perspective, this is it — but not the brochure kind. This is the process I use when a supplier of FLSmidth's scale lands on my desk.

I've spent the last 9 years in procurement for mineral processing operations, handling equipment budgets north of $2M annually. I've reviewed FLSmidth proposals, visited their facilities, and walked away from two of their quotes. This is a buyer's view, not a sales pitch.

Seven steps. Work through them in order and you'll have everything you need to make a defensible decision.

Step 1: Verify the Service Footprint Before You Look at Equipment

Don't start with machine specs. Start with the service organization. A crusher or a SAG mill is a 20-year asset. You'll need parts, maintenance and technical expertise for as long as you own it. If the nearest service hub is 2,000 km away, that will hurt more than a 3% price difference ever will.

FLSmidth's service network is genuinely global — they have service centers across all major mining regions and a solid spare parts distribution setup. But 'global' in the brochure and 'global' in practice are different things. Ask for the service center closest to your site. Ask for response time commitments in writing.

Checklist:

  • Location of the nearest service center and parts depot
  • Response time SLA in the service agreement
  • Number of field service engineers in your region
  • Spare parts stock coverage for the equipment you're evaluating

Step 2: Map Their Product Portfolio Against Your Flowsheet

FLSmidth calls itself a full flowsheet supplier, and honestly, they're one of the few that comes close. Crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, conveying and — for cement — pyro processing. Not many vendors cover that much of a plant.

Here's the thing: a broad portfolio doesn't mean every product in it is best-in-class. A flagship crusher can be excellent while the same vendor's filters are just average. Write your RFP around each piece of the flowsheet, even if your goal is to source from a single supplier.

Check the installed base in your ore type, ask which products were developed in-house vs acquired, and ask when the last major redesign happened. If the answer to the last one is '15 years ago,' dig deeper.

Step 3: Check Financial Health — Not Just Profitability

This is the step most procurement people skip. And it's a red flag if you're systematically skipping it, because a supplier that's under financial stress will cut corners exactly when it matters.

FLSmidth is listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen under the ticker FLS, so its financials are public. If you've ever searched for 'flsmidth udbytte 2020' (that's Danish for dividend), you already know the story: the company withdrew its proposed dividend in early 2020, right when COVID hit. That's a liquidity-protection decision, and it tells you something about capital discipline.

But don't stop at the dividend history. The annual report gives you the full picture. What I actually look at:

  • Order intake — this is forward-looking revenue, not history
  • Service revenue share — recurring revenue is a better quality signal than one-off equipment sales
  • Net working capital trends
  • Order backlog coverage

In my first year of buying equipment, I never checked financial health. I assumed a big name equals safe. That's the classic rookie error, and it burned me when a well-known supplier in a different industry filed for restructuring mid-delivery. Run the check on every vendor. Every single one.

Step 4: Calculate Total Cost of Ownership, Not Sticker Price

Here's where I sound like a broken record at every sales meeting: the purchase price is maybe a third of what the equipment will cost over its life. Wear parts, energy consumption, planned and unplanned downtime, training, and the cost of a shutdown during installation. That's the real number.

When I compared FLSmidth against a lower-cost alternative for a SAG mill upgrade, the competitor's quote was 18% lower. Looked great in the monthly review. Then I ran the TCO model I built after getting burned on hidden fees twice — and the picture flipped. The competitor charged extra for commissioning support that FLSmidth included. Their liner design required changing our wear parts supplier. And their delivery window overlapped with our scheduled maintenance shutdown by two weeks. The 'cheap' option was 11% more expensive over five years.

Don't take my word for it. Build the model. Capital cost, plus 10 years of wear parts, plus energy at your site's rate, plus two major service interventions, plus a realistic downtime cost. Simple. That's the comparison that matters.

Step 5: Ask About Automation Compatibility Upfront

Modern mining equipment runs on control systems, and FLSmidth's automation stack — ECS/SCADA, ProcessExpert and the rest — is genuinely advanced. But if your plant runs on a different distributed control system, ask how their equipment integrates with your environment. Don't assume standard protocols.

'We support open protocols' usually means 'we'll support yours for an extra license fee.' Ask:

  • Which DCS protocols are included in the base price?
  • What does connecting to my existing system cost?
  • Who owns the process data?
  • What happens to historical data if we migrate DCS vendors later?

And try to meet the automation engineers, not just the sales team. Sales says 'full integration.' The engineer can tell you whether that's been done with your specific control system before.

Step 6: Check References in Your Specific Segment

FLSmidth has thousands of installed units worldwide. Good. But what you need is: have they done your application, in your conditions, at your scale? Same ore type, similar throughput, comparable climate.

I remember a communication failure from early in my career that still makes me wince. The vendor said 'standard size.' I heard 'universally standard, fits anything.' We discovered we meant different things when the equipment arrived and didn't align with the existing steel structure. That mismatch cost us $600 in rework, which is small compared to what it could have been — we were lucky it wasn't a $60,000 fix.

Reference questions that actually work:

  • 'What was commissioning like?' — not 'were you satisfied'
  • 'How long did it take to reach full capacity?'
  • 'What would you have written into the contract differently?'

Step 7: Place a Small Service Order Before the Big One

This is the anti-intuitive step that most buyers skip: don't commit to a multi-million-dollar equipment purchase from a new supplier before testing them on a modest service order. Fifteen thousand dollars, not four million.

Order spare parts. Request a technical site audit. Have them repair a piece of equipment that's currently underperforming. You learn a lot from these small interactions — response speed, document accuracy, invoice correctness, how their engineers talk.

Even after placing the big order, I kept second-guessing. What if their quality didn't match the samples? The months before commissioning were stressful. That doubt is normal. It faded when the machine ran at spec from day one. But if that small test order had gone badly, the big order would have gone somewhere else.

Common Mistakes and Notes

A few things learned the hard way, so you can skip that part:

Focusing on Capex alone. The lowest capital bid is the highest risk bid. You might save half a million upfront and spend more on compromised reliability. That's not discipline. That's a bet.

Ignoring local content requirements. If your project requires local manufacturing or local services, check FLSmidth's local capability before writing the RFP. It burned us once with a vendor that had zero local presence, and that was a painful conversation with the project director.

Trusting 'estimated' delivery dates. In 2021, we waited on a critical gearbox and the vendor kept saying 'next quarter.' Every quarter. Written specifications didn't fix their supply chain. What finally helped was building buffer time into the project plan and putting a penalty clause into the contract.

Not getting training costs into the quote. Operators need training. Maintenance crews need training. If it's not in the proposal, it's an afterthought, and the afterthought will be billed at full price later.

Bottom Line

FLSmidth is a solid choice for mining and cement equipment, particularly if you want one supplier that covers most of the flowsheet and has a genuinely global service network. The company has been around since 1882, the financials are public, and the technology is proven.

But solid doesn't mean automatic. Run the checklist: verify the service footprint, map the portfolio, check the financial health, build the TCO model, clarify automation integration, call the references, and place a small order first. Do that, and you don't need luck. I've done this process more times than I can count without it, and I can tell you which one costs more.
